We have a broad and varied curriculum which is carefully balanced, ensuring that the key skills of Literacy and Mathematics are central along with the wider life skills and knowledge needed to ensure that our children are successful and well equipped for the next stage in their life.
We also provide opportunities to excel in activities additional to the school day (extended provision) including: sports, music and the performing arts. For further information see the last link to the right which will show 'Celebrating Success across the Curriculum' on the School Performance page.
River of Learning
We deliver our teaching using a subject specific “River of Learning”- a journey of both excellence and enjoyment, personalising and fulfilling the needs of everyone who travels its path. Starting as a stream, it will meander and grow in strength and depth, transporting children onwards to the next stage in their journey. Ultimately we want every child’s learning to flow.
Our teaching builds independence, challenges stereotypes, encourages empathy and respect for alternative opinions, encourages resilience, good communication and collaboration whilst also promoting positive community relations.
As part of this teaching we run a parallel strand of life skills which enables a focus on personal qualities and skills that are needed in every aspect of our daily lives. We also use and encourage critical thinking through structured use of questioning – this helps our children explore ideas and develop a respect for other opinions.
High quality texts
The curriculum is based around high quality texts in order to instil in all children a love of reading and to expose them to rich and extended vocabulary. Our texts are chosen to enable children to experience a range of literature whilst also increasing children’s cultural literacy.

The class structure
At Rustington we have 19 classes, each named after a different country. As the children move up through the school, they move through various country names and get to know a wide range of cultures, customs and languages.

Innovation and research
We are currently working with external bodies to trial and further research in to teaching and learning. Are aim is to ensure that we provide the best education possible for our children.
The effect of colour blindness in Education
In September 2019 we will start working with the University of Brighton's Development Psychology department to research the impact of colour blindness on learning; trialing and evaluating their new app called “ColourSpot” which aims to identify children who are colour-blind. They are aiming to develop an earlier diagnosis which will help children with colour-blindness so they are not disadvantaged in their education as colour is used widely in learning activities.
Brighton University - research into strategies to aid working memory
Slow processing speed and trouble with our working memory can significantly impact the ability and speed with which we can tackle problems. At Rustington found that this was a barrier to our children's attainment so we began working on an intervention called Memory Magic which enables children to develop memory skills that suit them as an individual. This had a significant impact on children's progress so in 2018 - 2019 we trialled introducing this into whole class teaching in Year 1.
We are now working with Brighton University to further analyse this data and assessing its impact with this cohort of children over the following years.
Codingmaster LTD is a student first learning environment, combing and balancing varied teaching styles with the use of computer gamification. Its aim is to produce an engaging and up-to-date digital learning environment, designed to meet and exceed the national curriculum learning objectives for computer science, digital literacy and e-safety for children aged 5 to 11.
From September 2019, Rustington Community Primary School will have access to an early release of our application. They will be instrumental in influencing the development of the product to ensure a robust, high quality learning experience that engages and challenges every child to ensure high quality, integrated computing skills and knowledge.

Multisensory learning project
From 2016 we have worked with Sussex University on their Multisensory Learning Project. The team are tracking a group of children through their schooling to learn how multisensory thinking influences their learning.
